Everything You Need to Know About Tufts Financial Aid
Financial aid packages are comprised of a combination of grants, loans, and work-study.
GRANTS
Grants are awards that do not have to be repaid, and Tufts grants are always the largest source of grant aid received by Tufts undergraduates. Tufts Grants exceeded $70 million in 2015-16 and were by far the largest source of grant aid received by Tufts undergraduates. The amount of Tufts Grants ranged from $1000 to more than $60,000. Tufts students also receive grant funds from federal and state programs such as Pell and SEOG grants, ROTC scholarships, as well as funding from a variety of private sources. Over 34 percent of last year’s entering class received more than $18 million in Tufts grant aid.
STUDENT LOANS
Students with total family incomes of less than $60,000 will typically receive a financial aid package that includes no student loans. Their full need will be met with grant funds and work study. All other financial aid recipients will be awarded student loans as a part of their financial aid package. The standard freshman loan amount is $5,000, but individual loan amounts may range from $500 to $7,000 (maximum). No interest accrues on these loans and no payments are due until after the student graduates or leaves school.

WORK-STUDY
Financial aid recipients are usually also offered work study of up to $2000 per year. When students arrive in September, they can view our online employment listing for a campus job that matches their interest and academic schedule. Students are paid $11.00 – $15.00 per hour, and freshmen who choose work study jobs typically work 5 - 10 hours per week. Work study wages are paid directly to students to be used towards their living expenses on campus. Merit Scholarships
Tufts does not offer merit or academic scholarships. All aid is based solely on financial need and is not adjusted for superior academic performance or extracurricular activities. The only exception is a small ($500 per year) award provided through the Tufts National Merit Scholarship program. ROTC program scholarships are also available.

Financial Aid for International Students
Each year, we anticipate that a fairly small and highly qualified group of international students will be offered financial aid. Because Tufts relies on federally-subsidized funds for which international students do not qualify, the university must draw on limited institutional resources (primarily grants) when aiding international students. While competition for international student financial aid is strong, the university is committed to maintaining and expanding its global campus community.
Important Rules
The university awards financial aid only on the basis of demonstrated need. We do not offer any academic merit aid.
If you expect that you will need financial aid at Tufts, you must apply for it when you apply for admission. If you wait until you are notified about your admission to Tufts to apply for aid, you will not receive it.
Financial aid is not available to international students who do not receive aid upon admittance. The family contribution that is determined upon acceptance will remain the same as long as the student is eligible to receive financial aid.

CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE
International students applying for financial aid must submit the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE form. The PROFILE application, accessible on the College Board website, can be completed and submitted online.
If submission of the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE would cause significant financial hardship for your family, please complete the International Student Aid Application.
International Student Certification of Finances
If you are accepted to Tufts and choose to enroll, you will be required to submit the International Student Certification of Finances to the International Center. All documents should be written in English or accompanied by certified translations from a local consulate, embassy, or school official.

Special Programs and Resources
The Davis United World Scholars Program
The Davis United World College Scholars program, generously funded by the Shelby Davis family, entitles graduates of United World College Schools (UWC) to receive a need-based grant of up to $10,000 per year toward the costs of undergraduate study at Tufts. UWC graduates with additional need may apply to Tufts for need-based financial aid. Both the Davis United World College Scholars grant and all Tufts financial aid grants are multi-year awards (up to four years) and are renewable if the student maintains good academic standing.

A website sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, EducationUSA is a useful resource to address broader questions regarding higher education in this country.
